⚠ Safety first: Coney Island is a tidal island — the strand crossing floods fast and completely. Cross only at low tide, following the line of 14 marker pillars, check tide times before you set out and allow a generous margin to get back. If in any doubt, take the boat from Rosses Point instead — people have been caught out here.

About Coney Island (tidal)

Coney Island is the tidal island of Sligo Bay, reachable by car or on foot across the strand from the Strandhill side at low tide, following the famous line of 14 stone pillars. The tide is the hazard here: cross only at low water, following the markers, check tide times before you set out and allow a generous margin to get back, because the strand floods fast. The boat from Rosses Point is the safe alternative. The island was, so the story goes, the namesake of New York's Coney Island, named by a Sligo captain; there is one seasonal pub, McGowan's, and rabbits everywhere.

Nearby beaches

The foot crossing starts from the Strandhill side; the boat runs from Rosses Point pier as the safe alternative.
