About Portrane

Portrane sits on a quiet peninsula north of Donabate, with a long sweep of sand — the Portrane or Brook beach — running below low cliffs and dunes. It is a peaceful, uncrowded alternative to the bigger Fingal strands, good for long walks with views to Lambay Island. The EPA classifies the bathing water at Portrane Brook Good. There are actually two beaches at Portrane: the main strand and, at the southern end near a Martello tower, the smaller sheltered cove of Tower Bay. Check the tide and local signage before swimming, and take care on the cliff paths above the beach.

Tower Bay

At the southern end of Portrane, tucked beside a Martello tower, Tower Bay is a small, sheltered sandy cove — the more intimate of Portrane's two beaches. Backed by the tower and a short walk from the main strand, it is a calm spot for a paddle on a fine day. As with the main beach, no lifeguard is shown, so check the tide and swim with care.
