About Lettergesh Beach
Lettergesh is a long, quiet strand on the Renvyle Peninsula, just minutes beyond Glassilaun, backed by dunes and opening to a sweeping view of the Twelve Bens, the Maumturks and Mweelrea. It was here, on this beach, that the horse-race scene in John Ford's classic The Quiet Man (1952) was filmed. The strand grows vast at low tide and is often completely deserted out of season — the peaceful alternative for when Glassilaun fills up on a summer's day. A car park sits at the end of a narrow road off the Connemara Loop; there are some larger stones near the car park, with clean sand beyond. There are no lifeguards and no facilities, so come prepared, but few beaches in Connemara match its combination of space, silence and mountain backdrop.
