About Glassilaun Beach
Glassilaun is a sheltered horseshoe of silver-white sand between Tully Cross and the Killary Fjord, sitting beneath the great bulk of Mweelrea in north Connemara. The water here is exceptionally clear — some of the cleanest on the west coast — with rock pools appearing at low tide, and Scubadive West runs snorkelling and diving trips straight from the cove. The beach stood in for a Cornish shore in the 2006 film Tristan & Isolde. Reaching it means about seven kilometres of very narrow, winding coast road from Tully Cross church, with limited parking at the beach car park and portable toilets in summer only. When a big swell runs there is an advanced-only reef break, but on a calm day this is a serene, crystal-clear place to swim. Continue along the peninsula to quiet Lettergesh.
