It is big walking sand under open sky, a place for beach horse rides galloping the strand and for challenging surf suited to experienced boards only. It is not a swimming beach: multiple sources are explicit that shifting sands and strong currents make it unsafe to bathe. Walkers who want a safe swim should head instead to sheltered White Strand, Doonbeg nearby. A small car park sits beside the bay with a path down to the sand. A Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point, Doughmore rewards walking, watching the surf and taking in the wide Atlantic light rather than getting in the water.
