About Béal Bán

Béal Bán is a broad, dune-backed Green Coast beach over a mile long near Ballyferriter, in the West Kerry Gaeltacht on the Dingle Peninsula. Its wide, gently sloping sand makes it hard to get out of your depth, so it is a genuinely family-friendly strand, with rock pools at one end and views to the Three Sisters headland and the Blasket Islands beyond. It is best known for its annual beach horse races each June or July, when the sand fills with crowds and the festivities carry on into the pubs of Ballyferriter. Quieter than the peninsula's flagged beaches for the rest of the year, it has no lifeguard, so swimmers should take local care. At low water the sands run round towards neighbouring Wine Strand.

Nearby on Smerwick Harbour

Wine Strand and Béal Bán sit on the same Smerwick Harbour shore near Ballyferriter and run into one another at low water — an easy pairing on a day exploring the west of the Dingle Peninsula.
