About Travelahawk Beach
Travelahawk is a small, sheltered pebble inlet below the ruined Black Castle, just south of Wicklow harbour, reached by a flight of steps down from the Castle Street area. It is a year-round swimming spot with a loyal local following and a big place in the town's story: this is the reputed landing place of St Patrick in 432 AD, the episode that gives Wicklow its Irish name, Cill Mhantáin, and the little cove has since doubled as a filming location for the Vikings television series. There is no beach car park; the nearest parking is the council's on-street pay zone around the Seafront and Bath Street, a short walk from the steps. It is not an EPA-monitored bathing water, so no official rating is published — and note that a temporary swimming notice was issued here in the past over bacterial levels, so check Wicklow County Council advisories and local signage before you get in.
