About Silver Strand (Killadoon / Tallabawn)

Silver Strand — also known as Tallabawn or Thallabawn — is a remote, unspoilt sweep of sand at the mouth of Killary, some 23km south of Louisburgh. Sheltered by rocky headlands and high dunes, it looks out to Inishturk, Caher, Inishbofin and Clare Island, with Mweelrea, Connacht's highest mountain, rising behind. The final approach is by narrow, winding roads, with informal parking above the beach; families come for its shelter, though there is no lifeguard, so swim with care. Beside it lies the Lost Valley, a famine-deserted village among the dunes and lakes — one of the west's most affecting stories — with more than 700 archaeological monuments nearby, including the 37-arch clapper bridge at Killeen.
