About Sandymount

Sandymount Strand is the vast tidal flatland on the south side of Dublin Bay, immortalised in James Joyce's Ulysses. At low tide the sea retreats far across the sand, opening a huge expanse for walks with views to the Poolbeg chimneys and Howth. It is a place to walk and take in the bay rather than a bathing beach: the EPA classifies the water Sufficient — the lowest passing grade — so swim only with that in mind and after checking beaches.ie. The bigger hazard here is the tide, which returns fast across the flats and can cut off anyone who has walked far out.
