About Newcastle

Newcastle is the busy resort strand where the Mourne Mountains sweep down to the sea, with Slieve Donard — Northern Ireland's highest peak — rising straight up behind the town. A long sweep of sand runs along the promenade, backed by cafés, amusements and the famous Royal County Down golf links, making it the liveliest beach on the Down coast. A DAERA-identified bathing water, it is the natural base for walking in the Mournes, and the seafront, harbour and mountain backdrop draw families all summer. Check the DAERA dashboard for its current water-quality classification before swimming.
