Littor Strand is a long, quiet Green Coast beach on the Shannon Estuary coast of north Kerry, near Asdee and Ballylongford. A stretch of fine golden sand with a shallow, gentle entry, it stays peaceful even in high summer, backed by low fields and looking out over the wide estuary with its abundant birdlife. It is signposted from Ballylongford, with parking close to the sand. Nearby stands Carrigafoyle Castle, the striking 15th-century O'Connor stronghold on the estuary, well worth pairing with a beach visit. Littor is unsupervised, with no lifeguard and few facilities, so it is best to swim with a buddy, keep to the shallows and take the estuary tides into account. For solitude, walking and quiet coastal beauty far from the tourist trail, it is hard to beat.
