About Howe Strand

Howe Strand is a secluded sandy beach near Kilbrittain, overlooked by the ruins of the old coastguard station that was burned during the War of Independence in the 1920s — a story that gives the beach its character. It is a fine spot for swimming, surfing, body-boarding and rock fishing, tucked away at the end of narrow local roads. Parking is informal only, so arrive early and park considerately for neighbours. There is no lifeguard here, so swimming should be taken with care and children kept close. Quiet, scenic and a little hard to find, Howe Strand rewards anyone who makes the trip down to this atmospheric corner of the West Cork coast.
