About The Flaggy Shore (New Quay)

The Flaggy Shore at New Quay is the limestone coast made famous by Seamus Heaney's poem 'Postscript' — "And some time make the time to drive out west / Into County Clare, along the Flaggy Shore." It runs from New Quay to Finavarra Point where the grey Burren meets Galway Bay, a place of fossil-embedded pavements and biokarst, wind-and-water-sculpted rock, rather than a conventional sandy strand — though there is a small pocket of sand for young paddlers. Park at New Quay for the flat, circular shore-road walk toward the Martello tower, a favourite for its birdlife, geology and big bay light. Linnane's Lobster Bar and Cafe Linalla's ice cream close the loop. It is a shore for walking, fossil-spotting and slow looking as much as for swimming.
