About Duncannon

Duncannon is a Blue Flag beach on the Hook Peninsula in south Wexford, a broad 1.6km sandy strand beneath the historic star-shaped Duncannon Fort, a 16th-century bastion fort that runs guided tours. Lifeguarded in summer with safe, gently shelving water and good accessible facilities, it is a lively family beach that hosts the annual International Sand Sculpting Festival over the August bank holiday, with kitesurfing lessons from Hooked Kite Surfing. Cars are allowed to drive onto and park on the sand here — a local tradition, but take care: watch for children and other beachgoers, keep your speed right down, and always check tide times so you are not caught out by an incoming tide. The fort, the village and the Hook Lighthouse drive make it a fine day out. It regained its Blue Flag in 2026.
