About Dog's Bay (Trá Chuan an Mhada)

Dog's Bay (Trá Chuan an Mhada) is a mile-long horseshoe of dazzling white sand near Roundstone in Connemara, and one of the most unusual beaches in the world: the 'sand' is not rock at all but tiny fragments of foraminifera shells, giving it a brilliant, almost tropical whiteness. Sheltered, shallow and calm, it is a Connemara family favourite, joined back-to-back with Gurteen Bay by a rare sandy tombolo — a double beach you can walk across. The dunes behind are a fragile machair system under active conservation, so keep to the marked paths, stay off the dunes and don't camp wild. The car park is tiny and jams in summer; there are no toilets, no facilities and no lifeguard, with the nearest amenities back in Roundstone. Climb Errisbeg above the beach for the classic twin-bay photograph.

Its tombolo twin

Dog's Bay and Gurteen Bay sit back-to-back on a rare sandy tombolo — you can walk across from one to the other.
