About Coral Strand (Ballyconneely / Mannin Bay)
Coral Strand on Mannin Bay, near Ballyconneely, is one of the rarest beach types in Europe: what looks like golden 'coral' underfoot is actually maerl, the calcified fragments of a slow-growing red seaweed, washed ashore over centuries. The pale, crunchy shore reflects the light and the sheltered water is often a touch warmer than the open Atlantic, making it a lovely spot for a paddle or a snorkel. This is not the same beach as the better-known Coral Beach at Carraroe (Trá an Dóilín) further east — Connemara has two coral strands, and this Ballyconneely one is the quieter of the pair. Access is easy off the Ballyconneely road with plenty of parking space. There is no lifeguard, so swim with care, and please leave the fragile maerl where it lies.
